Samedi 14 mars 2020 et dimanche 15 mars

Aujourd’hui nous avions prévu une deuxième journée en bus panoramique mais la fatigue se fait sentir et nous commençons à nous inquiéter pour notre vol de retour car la pandémie due au covid 19 se répand. Tout au long du séjour nous avons abondamment utilisé les masques et le gel sanitizer local. Alors ce matin grasse matinée et déjeuner rapide à l’extérieur avant de quitter l’hôtel et de sauter dans un taxi où nous avons le plaisir de discuter avec notre chauffeur éthiopien chrétien qui nous confirme la liberté d’expression de toutes les religions dans ce pays étrange et accueillant ou se mêlent les excès de traditions et de modernités. Nous avons particulièrement apprécié la douceur de vivre, la propreté et la sécurité qui règnent à Abu Dhabi. Mais tout ce que nous avons vécu et découvert n’aurait pas été possible sans la gentillesse et l’accueil amical et royal que nous ont réservé nos amis Kiron et Swathy que nous remercions ici.

Après quelques craintes de voir notre vol annulé nous embarquons finalement dans notre avion Swiss Air et rentrons au pays après une escale à Zurich. Notre Jérémy chéri nous accueille à CDG et c’est le confinement qui commence !!

Today we had planned a second day on a scenic bus but we are tired and we are starting to worry about our return flight as the covid 19 pandemic is spreading. Throughout the stay we used a lot of masks and local sanitizer gel. Today we lie in and quick lunch outside before leaving the hotel and hopping in a taxi where we have the pleasure of chatting with our Ethiopian Christian driver who confirms the freedom of expression of all religions in this strange and welcoming country where the excess of traditions and modernities mingle. We particularly appreciated the sweetness of life, the cleanliness and the security which reign in Abu Dhabi. But all that we experienced and discovered would not have been possible without the kindness and the friendly and royal welcome that our friends Kiron and Swathy have given us, whom we thank here. After some fears of having our flight canceled, we finally board our Swiss Air plane and return to our country after a stopover in Zurich. Our dear Jérémy welcomes us to CDG and it is the confinement that begins !!

Ce matin comme d’habitude le soleil brille et la température de 30° Celsius sera agréable. Après un rapide petit déjeuner nous nous dirigeons vers l’arrêt du « City Sightseeing Dubaï Bus » pour nous déplacer dans la ville. Notre premier objectif est de rejoindre la ligne « Bleu » qui va nous amener vers l’Etihad Museum, la Jumeirah Mosque, le Mercato Shopping Mall, le célèbre Jumeirah Beach Hôtel en forme d’hélice, le non moins célèbre Burj Al Arab Hôtel en forme de voilier, le Souk Madina Jumeirah et enfin le Mall of the Emirates où nous descendons pour prendre notre correspondance  avec la ligne « Jaune ». Tout au long de notre parcours nous avons pu admirer l’architecture étonnante de gratte-ciel aux formes et couleurs originales, nous avons aussi traversé des quartiers résidentiels aux belles maisons et longé la mer et les plages sur Jumeirah street. La ligne « Jaune » nous amène au quartier de la Marina que nous avons déjà parcouru avec Kiron et Swathy et surtout au « Palm Jumeirah » pour la croisière qui va nous faire découvrir depuis la mer cette ile artificielle en forme de palmier. Après un rapide déjeuner nous embarquons pour un moment de détente au soleil. Chaque branche du palmier est occupée par de luxueuses villas les pieds dans l’eau avec plage privée. La croisière nous conduit au pied de l’hôtel Atlantis the Palm. De retour à l’embarcadère nous filons jusqu’au Dubaï Mall pour visiter le très bel aquarium intégré au centre commercial. Epuisés nous rentrons en métro et prenons notre repas au pub de l’hôtel.

This morning as usual the sun is shining and the temperature of 30 ° Celsius will be pleasant. After a quick breakfast we head to the City Sightseeing Dubai Bus stop to get around the city. Our first objective is to join the "Blue" line which will bring us to the Etihad Museum, the Jumeirah Mosque, the Mercato Shopping Mall, the famous Jumeirah Beach Hotel in the shape of a propeller, the no less famous Burj Al Arab Hotel in form of sailboat, the Souk Madina Jumeirah and finally the Mall of the Emirates where we descend to take our correspondence with the "Yellow" line. Throughout our journey we could admire the amazing architecture of skyscrapers with original shapes and colors, we also crossed residential areas with beautiful houses and went along the sea and the beaches on Jumeirah street. The “Yellow” line brings us to the Marina district that we have already traveled with Kiron and Swathy and especially to the “Palm Jumeirah” for the cruise which will make us discover from the sea this artificial palm-shaped island. After a quick lunch we embark on for a moment of relaxation in the sun. Each branch of the palm tree is occupied by luxurious waterfront villas with private beach. The cruise takes us to the foot of the Atlantis the Palm Hotel. Back at the pier we head to the Dubai Mall to visit the beautiful aquarium integrated into the shopping center. Exhausted we return to the metro and have our meal in our hotel pub.

Ce matin c’est grâce matinée pour récupérer de mon rhume et des fatigues du début du voyage. Après une rapide collation nous prenons le métro en direction du Dubaï Mall au pied du Burj Khalifa Building. Toute l’après midi nous parcourons les boutiques de cet immense centre commercial sur trois niveaux qui nous donne accès au Souk Al Bahar spécialisé dans la joaillerie et autres produits de luxe.  Après avoir repéré l’entrée de l’aquarium que nous visiterons demain nous aspirons à un peu d’air frais et sortons au pied du Burj Khalifa building pour admirer les jeux d’eaux et de lumières au milieu d’une foule importante. Retour à l’hôtel.

This morning we have a lie in in order to recover from the tiredness of the first part of the trip. After a quick snack we take the metro to the Dubai Mall at the foot of the Burj Khalifa Building. All afternoon we walk and shop through this huge commercial center on three levels which gives us access to the Souk Al Bahar specializing in jewelry and other luxury goods. After having spotted the entrance to the aquarium which we will visit tomorrow, we aspire to some fresh air and go out at the foot of the Burj Khalifa building to admire the play of water and lights in the midst of a large crowd. Return to the hotel.

Il fait beau mais nous sommes un peu tristes c’est notre dernière journée avec Kiron et Swathy . Ce matin c’est Kiron qui nous fait le petit déjeuner. Sa spécialité c’est une variante de l’œuf brouillé additionné d’épices, en sandwich dans du pain grillé. Un délice ! Ensuite nous bouclons nos valises et traversons cette belle ville d’Abu Dhabi. Après une heure et demie  de conduite nous arrivons à Dubaï et nous arrêtons dans un restaurant indien « grill » pour un repas original. Le service nous apporte dans un premier temps, à volonté, des brochettes de viande ou de poisson plus ou moins épicé suivi d’un buffet pantagruélique ! Ensuite nos amis nous déposent à notre hôtel « Four Points » sur Sheikh Zayed Road. C’est le moment de nous dire au revoir. Kiron nous offre des billets de visite de la tour Burj Khalifa pour 17H00 et nous saluons  nos amis qui nous ont si bien accueillis comme des princes dans ce pays des mille et une nuits.

A peine installés au 14 ème étage nous repartons pour notre visite au Burj Khalifa. Notre hôtel est situé en position centrale dans la ville ainsi nous pouvons emprunté le très moderne métro aérien pour nous rendre au Dubaï Mall où se trouve la tour de 828 mètres de haut. Là, nous attendons notre tour (sans jeu de mots) avant d’atteindre le 124 ème étage point culminant de la visite. D’ici, bien sur, la vue est impressionnante. Nous dominons la ville et les autres grattes ciels alentours. Nous attendons le couché de soleil pour la photo et repartons à la nuit vers le métro et l’hôtel. Un rapide repas sur Sheick Zayed Road et dodo !

Sun shines but we’re a little sad it’s our last day with Kiron and Swathy. This morning Kiron is the cook. His specialty is a variant of scrambled egg with spices, sandwiched in toast. A delight! Then we pack our bags and cross this beautiful city of Abu Dhabi. After an hour and a half of driving we arrive in Dubai and we stop in an Indian restaurant grill for an original meal. The service brings us at first, at will, skewers of meat or more or less spicy fish followed by a pantagruelic buffet ! Then our friends drop us off at our Four Points Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road. Now is the time to say goodbye and Kiron offers us visit tickets to the Burj Khalifa tower for 5:00 p.m. and we greet our friends who welcomed us so well as princes in this country of a thousand and one nights. Just installed on the 14th floor we leave for our visit to Burj Khalifa. Our hotel is centrally located in the city so we can take the very modern skytrain to get to the Dubai Mall where the 828 meter high tower is located. There we wait for our turn before reaching the 124 th floor, the At The Top terrace of the tower. From here, of course, the view is impressive. We overlook the city and the other skyscrapers around. We wait for the sunset for the photo and leave at night for the metro and the hotel. A quick meal on Sheick Zayed Road and « dodo » !

Mardi 10 mars 2020

Après un dernier petit déjeuner à bord du QE2 nous partons pour Abu Dhabi. Arrivé en ville Kiron nous présente le quartier du Ferrari World puis nous amène directement au YAS MALL, autre immense centre commercial où Patricia fait quelques emplettes et où nous déjeunons dans un très bon restaurant indien le Asha’s appartenant à une fameuse chanteuse indienne. Ensuite départ vers le musée du Louvre. Il est maintenant l’heure de prendre un thé ; pour cela nos hôtes nous conduisent aux Etihad Towers, au nombre de cinq ces tours sont hautes de 300 mètres. Nous montons au 74 ème étage de l’une d’entre elle pour découvrir une vue panoramique sur 360°. Le soleil est en train de se coucher et les premières lumières s’allument déjà. Il est temps maintenant de rentrer à la maison où Kiron nous débouche un excellent champagne Le Roux du coin Français d’Afrique du Sud. La journée n’est pas terminée car nous ressortons pour un dîner dans un restaurant de poissons Thaï de l’Hôtel Intercontinental. Le repas est délicieux et l’ambiance détendue. Il est temps de rentré car il est tard et nous repartons demain pou Dubaï.

After a last breakfast aboard the QE2 we leave for Abu Dhabi. Arriving in town Kiron introduces us to the Ferrari World district and then takes us directly to YAS MALL, another huge shopping center where Patricia does some shopping and where we have lunch in a very good Indian restaurant the Asha’s belonging to a famous indien singer. Then departure to the Louvre museum. Now is the time for tea ; therefor our guests take us to the Etihad Towers, five of which are 300 meters high. We go up to the 74 th floor of one of them to discover a panoramic view. The sun is setting and the first lights are already on. Now is the time to go home where Kiron offers us an excellent Le Roux champagne from the French corner near capetown in South Africa. The day is not over as we go out for dinner at a Thai fish restaurant in the compoud of the Intercontinental Hotel. The meal is delicious and the atmosphere relaxed. It is time to return home it is late and we are leaving tomorrow for Dubai.

Une fois le petit déjeuner ambiance croisière terminé dans l’immense salle à manger du QE2 nous partons pour le Dubaï Museum situé au centre de la vielle ville dans l’ancien Fort AL FAHIDI. Sont présenteés des scènes de la vie d’un passé qui n’est pas si lointain ainsi que des barques et maisons traditionnelles. Nous récupérons la voiture filons dans la grande banlieue où de nombreux immeubles achevés ou en cours d’achèvement sont pratiquement inhabités, reflets de la crise immobilière de 2009. Après un rapide déjeuner nous arrivons au Miracle Garden et parcourons les allées magnifiques de ce parc sur le thème de la fleur qui se prête parfaitement à la photographie. Ensuite nous nous dirigeons vers une autre attraction très prisée des émiratis et des touristes, le Global Village. Il s’agit d’un immense parc composé de non moins immenses pavillons représentant de nombreux pays à travers le monde et qui offrent à la vente leurs spécialités artisanales culinaires et vestimentaires. On trouve également de nombreux restaurants, une fête foraine, une immense scène de concert où s’enchaine des spectacles de danseurs et au fil des allées des animations de clowns. De quoi y passer de nombreuses heures. Le soleil s’est couché depuis longtemps et le vent froid du désert souffle ; il est temps de se réchauffer d’une bonne soupe dans un restaurant turque et nous rentrons au chaud dans notre cabine du QE2. Encore une belle journée !

Once ended the breakfast cruise atmosphere in the huge dining room of the QE2 we leave for the Dubai Museum located in the center of the old city in the Fort AL FAHIDI. Scenes from the life of a not-too-distant past are presented, as well as traditional boats and houses. Then we get into the car to the far off suburb where many buildings completed or under completion are practically uninhabited, result of the real estate crisis of 2009. After a quick lunch we arrive at the Miracle Garden and walk the magnificent alleys of this flower theme Park which lends itself perfectly to photography. Then we head to another popular attraction for emiratis and tourists, the Global Village. It is a huge Park made up of no less immense pavilions representing many countries around the world and which offer for sale their artisanal culinary and clothing specialties. There are also many restaurants, a funfair, a huge concert stage where dancers' performances follow one another and clown animations along the aisles. Enough to spend many hours there. The sun has been setting for a long time and the cold desert wind is blowing; it’s time to warm up with some good soup in a Turkish restaurant and we’re going to warm up in our QE2 cabin. Another great day!

Dimanche 8 mars

Ce matin excellent petit déjeuner à l’hôtel avant de prendre la route pour Dubaï. Kiron nous conduit directement au célèbre hôtel Atlantis et son Parc Aquatique au bout du Palm Jumeirah. Nous marchons un peu le long du Golf Persique puis empruntons le métro aérien pour un aller et retour au dessus de cette très belle île artificielle. Ensuite direction le cœur de ville pour un bon déjeuner dans un restaurant typique de l’Inde du nord le RASOI GHAR. Il est temps de nous installer à l’hôtel. Kiron et Swathy nous ont réservé une surprise de taille. Ils nous ont installé à l’hôtel à bord du paquebot Queen Elisabeth 2 maintenant à quai à Dubaï. A peine installés dans notre belle cabine nous rejoignons un guide dans le lobby qui va nous faire visiter ce beau paquebot tout en nous contant son histoire. Je remercie chaleureusement nos amis qui m’ont ainsi permis de remonter dans le temps à l’époque de notre départ du Canada avec les parents sur le SS Homeric (anciennement Le SS Mariposa) autre liner sur l’Atlantique nord. Après ce moment d’émotion nous rejoignons un taxi qui va nous emmener à bord d’un Dohw, bateau traditionnel du Golfe pour un dîner croisière dans la Marina. Le repas est excellent et la soirée très agréable ainsi que le spectacle sur le bateau et tout autour dans la Marina. Retour vers l’hôtel pour quelques photos devant le QE2 et nuit paisible en cabine.

This morning excellent breakfast at the hotel before setting off for Dubai. Kiron takes us directly to the famous Atlantis hotel and its Aquatic Park at the tip of the Palm Jumeirah. We walk a little along the Persian Golf then take the aerial metro for a round trip over this beautiful artificial island. Then head to the heart of the city for a good lunch in a typical North Indian restaurant, RASOI GHAR. It's time to settle in at the hotel. Kiron and Swathy have given us a big surprise. They installed us at the hotel aboard the liner Queen Elisabeth 2 now docked in Dubai. Barely installed in our beautiful cabin we join a guide in the lobby who will show us around this beautiful liner while telling us its story. I warmly thank our friends who allowed me to go back in time when we left Canada with the parents on the SS Homeric (formerly The SS Mariposa), another liner on the North Atlantic. After this emotional moment we join a taxi which will take us aboard a Dosh, a traditional Gulf boat for a dinner cruise in the Marina. The meal is excellent and the evening very pleasant as well as the show on the boat and all around in the Marina. Return to the hotel for some photos in front of QE2 and peaceful night in the cabin.

Ce matin après une bonne nuit à la maison nous préparons nos valises car nous partons dans un premier temps pour le désert puis pour Dubaï. Kiron et Swathy nous conduisent dans un restaurant végétarien indien le « Indien by Nature » qui prépare les meilleurs « dosa » de la ville. Un régal ! Ensuite nous filons vers la Grande Mosquée Sheikh Zayed. Là, petite séance d’habillage pour les dames qui se recouvrent d’une abaya et nous entrons sur l’immense site de la mosquée au style purement islamique avec colonnes arches et dômes richement décorés. Les mosaïques et carrelages sont magnifiques. Cette mosquée est sensée présenter le plus grand lustre et le plus grand tapis artisanal du monde.

Après cette intéressante visite nous prenons la voiture en direction d’AL Ain seconde grande ville du pays, oasis au milieu du désert à la frontière du Sultanat D’Oman.  L’après midi est déjà bien avancée aussi nous prenons un sympathique repas rapide au Subway local avant de nous arrêter au fort Al Jahili que nous visitons. Il est bâti sur le même principe que celui d’Abu Dhabi et présente une intéressante exposition de photos sur un explorateur britannique Wilfred Thesiger qui a côtoyé le Sheikh Zayed dans sa jeunesse avant la création de l’UAE. Il est tard quand nous prenons la route du Djebel Hafeet, montagne qui domine la ville et point culminant des UAE à 1240 metres. Après le coucher du soleil nous filons vers notre confortable hôtel Rotana pour un très sympathique apéritif au vin blanc d’Afrique du Sud avant un excellent dîner de poissons au Trader Vic’s , le restaurant polynésien de l’hôtel.

This morning after a good night at home we prepare our suitcases because we leave first for the desert then for Dubai. Kiron and Swathy take us to an Indian vegetarian restaurant "Indien by Nature" which prepares the best "dosa" in town. A delight ! Then we head to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. There, small dressing session for the ladies who cover themselves with an abaya and we enter the huge site of the mosque in a purely Islamic style with arches columns and richly decorated domes. The mosaics and tiles are magnificent. This mosque is supposed to present the largest chandelier and the largest handcrafted carpet in the world. After this interesting visit we take the car in the direction of AL Ain the second big city of the country, oasis in the middle of the desert on the border of the Sultanate of Oman. The afternoon is already well advanced so we have a nice quick meal at the local Subway before stopping at Fort Al Jahili which we visit. It is built on the same principle as that of Abu Dhabi and presents an interesting photo exhibition on a British explorer Wilfred Thesiger who rubbed shoulders with Sheikh Zayed in his youth before the creation of the UAE. It is late when we take the road to Djebel Hafeet, mountain which dominates the city and the highest point of the UAE at 1240 meters. After sunset we head to our comfortable Rotana hotel for a lovely aperitif with white wine from South Africa before an excellent fish dinner at Trader Vic’s, the hotel’s Polynesian restaurant.

Après une bonne nuit réparatrice et un délicieux petit déjeuner indien nous partons visiter le Fort AL HOSN  centre du pouvoir et demeure de la famille régnante dans les années quarante qui a véritablement marqué la création de la ville d’Abu Dhabi. Cette visite du fort, remarquablement conservé, aujourd’hui au centre de la ville et à l’époque en plein désert, nous montre le chemin parcouru par la famille AL Nahyane et le pays en quelques décennies.

Ensuite après la visite d’une exposition d’arts populaires dans un grand complexe médiatique nous nous précipitons pour un rapide repas car nous avons rendez vous avec une agence touristique pour un safari dans le désert. Nous partons en 4X4 Toyota Land Cruiser et atteignons déjà les dunes de sable en à peine une heure. Nous visitons d’abord un élevage de chameaux (nombreux vivent en liberté dans le désert) puis nous dirigeons directement dans les dunes pour un safari digne du « Paris – Dakar » avec émotions très fortes garanties. Après une demi-heure notre voiture s’arrête devant un camp bédouin traditionnel pour une soirée BBQ avec spectacle de danse du ventre. Nous en profitons pour nous mettre dans la peau d’un véritable habitant du désert ! Après cette excellente soirée nous retour à la maison car demain nous partons tôt.

After a good restful night and a delicious Indian breakfast we leave to visit the Fort AL HOSN center of power and home of the ruling family in the forties that really marked the creation of the city of Abu Dhabi. This visit to the remarkably well-preserved fort, today in the center of the city and at the time in the middle of the desert, shows us the path traveled by the AL Nahyane family and the country in a few decades. Then after visiting a popular art exhibition in a large media complex we rush for a quick meal as soon we have an appointment with a tourist agency for a desert safari. We leave in a Toyota Land Cruiser 4X4 and already reach the sand dunes in barely an hour. We first visit a camel farm (many live in the wilderness) then head straight into the dunes for a safari worthy of the "Paris-Dakar rally" with very strong emotions guaranteed. After half an hour our car stops in front of a traditional Bedouin camp for a BBQ evening with belly dance show. We take this opportunity to put ourselves in the shoes of a real inhabitant of the desert ! After this excellent evening we return home because tomorrow we leave early.

Il est 5H30 quand nous sortons de la boite à sardine ailée. Après une longue attente pour récupérer nos bagages nous arrivons dans l’aérogare et retrouvons aussitôt Swathy et Kiron qui nous accueillent avec un large sourire. Nos amis ont l’air en pleine forme. Nous sommes ravis de les retrouver et montons presque aussitôt dans leur belle limousine direction leur appartement dans le cœur de la ville. Là un bon petit déjeuner mixte français/indien nous attend. Le café au lait spécial Swathy est délicieux ainsi que les croissants et autres galettes indiennes. Notre séjour commence bien et le grand beau temps (28°) est de la partie, en plein mois de mars, quel bonheur ! Nous voilà arrivés à Abu Dhabi le plus grand et le plus riche des 7 émirats qui composent les UAE depuis 1971. La ressource principale d’Abu Dhabi est le pétrole ce qui n’est pas le cas des autres émirats dont Dubaï qui mise surtout sur le tourisme et qui souffre depuis 2009 d’une crise économique due notamment au marché de l’immobilier (nombreux immeubles construits et peu occupés).  Autre particularité du pays ; sur les 3 millions d’habitants seuls 16% sont des émiratis, 56% sont originaires d’Inde, du Bangladesh et du Sri Lanka. Les autres habitants sont du reste du monde dont 8% d’occidentaux. Les villes d’Abu Dhabi et de Dubaï sont construites sur le modèle des villes américaines avec de larges avenues et de nombreux gratte-ciels couverts de verre. Le soir le spectacle des villes est magnifique car les architectes n’ont pas hésité à jouer avec les ampoules leds de toutes les couleurs.

Après un rafraichissement nous repartons vers un des 7 palais présidentiel (celui qui se visite) destiné aux réunions de travail des politiques. Là tous est grandiose à l’extérieur avec vue sur la mer et luxe à l’intérieur (marbres de toutes les couleurs, ors et cristal etc).

Après un rapide repas à la maison nous voilà reparti vers l’Heritage Village et son immense mat de 30 mètres supportant le drapeau des UAE. Ensuite promenade sur le front de mer pour une superbe vue sur la ville d’Abu Dhabi jusqu’au couché de soleil. De là nous partons pour un rapide tour au Marina Mall puis au superbe Emirat Palace hôtel où nous nous posons quelques instants autour d’une boisson et enfin nous rentrons à la maison pour un délicieux repas de cuisine indienne arrosé d’un bon vin rouge.

It is 5:30 am when we get out of the winged sardine tin. After a long wait to collect our luggage we arrive in the terminal and immediately find Swathy and Kiron who welcome us with a broad smile. Our friends look great. We are delighted to find them and almost immediately get into their beautiful limousine towards their apartment in the heart of the city. There a good mixed French / Indian breakfast awaits us. The Swathy special café au lait is delicious as are the croissants and other Indian pancakes. Our stay begins well and the great weather (28 °) is in the game, in the middle of March, what happiness! Here we are in Abu Dhabi, the largest and richest of the 7 emirates that make up the UAE since 1971. The main resource of Abu Dhabi is oil, which is not the case for other emirates including Dubai, which mainly relies on tourism and which has suffered since 2009 from an economic crisis due in particular to the real estate market (many buildings constructed and scarcely occupied). Another peculiarity of the country; only 16% of the 3 million inhabitants are Emiratis, 56% are from India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The rest of the population is from the rest of the world, 8% of whom are Westerners. The cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai are modeled after American cities with wide avenues and numerous skyscrapers covered in glass. At night, the sight of the cities is magnificent because the architects did not hesitate to play with LED bulbs of all colors.

After a refreshment we leave towards one of the 7 presidential palaces (the one that can be visited) intended for political working meetings. There all is magnificent outside with sea view and luxury inside (marbles of all colors, gold and crystal etc).

After a quick delicious meal at home, we set off again for the Heritage Village and its huge 30-meter mast supporting the UAE flag. Then walk on the waterfront for a superb view of the city of Abu Dhabi until sunset. From there we leave for a quick tour of the Marina Mall then the superb Emirat Palace hotel where we sit for a few moments over a drink and finally we go home for a delicious meal of Indian cuisine washed down with a good red wine.
